A lot of people have the perspective that a toner is completely useless in a skincare routine — you know what?, that’s completely false. Incorporating facial toner potentiates your skincare ritual towards effectiveness.

Here’s the deal, your facial cleanser may not pick out all the dirts off your face, but your facial toner will definitely make sure of that, — and how’s that?. When you wash your face using your skin-suitable facial cleanser, there is all tendencies that your face isn’t 100% cleansed, that’s where a facial toner comes in. Therefore in this article, I’ll be reviewing The Ordinary Glycolic 7% Toning Solution after using it for almost a month. But before we plunge into that, let’s know what a toner really does for your face.

What Does Facial Toner Do?

A facial toner targets and removes all traces of dirt, grime and impurities stuck in your pores after you wash your face. Not only does the liquid help clean off dirt (which your cleanser might have missed) but also shrink large pores, get rid of grime and gunk in the pores, target acne, soothe redness and balance the skin pH level. By so doing improving overall skin tone and texture.

A facial toners is the second step in a skincare routine after cleansing, before proceeding to other additional skincare topicals.

The Ordinary glycolic acid toner contains a concentration of 7% glycolic acid to deeply and mildly exfoliate the skin, (by stripping-off dead skin cells on the top layer of skin) target acne, shrink large pores, dissolve oil build-up and congestions in the pores.

What Is Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is an AHA family (alpha hydroxy acids), It’s the most common and widely used skin exfoliating acid, it’s derived from sugar plant. Glycolic acid is known for its small molecular size in weight which enables it to penetrate deeply into the skin to eradicate dead skin cells and dissolve sebum. According to Kenneth Howe, M.D., a dermatologist at Wexler Dermatology in New York City “Of all the AHAs, glycolic is the simplest in structure and the smallest; it has the lowest molecular weight”. That small molecular weight means “it’s easy for it to penetrate your skin and be super effective,” says Alix Shapiro, skin therapist at Heyday in NYC.

Why Is Exfoliation Important?

Exfoliation is very important in every skincare routine, infact you’ll be wasting your time and (your dear skincare products) if you don’t exfoliate your skin atleast twice or thrice weekly. To paint a picture it’s just like pouring water into a clogged kitchen sink — the water won’t pass through, same applies to your skin too. When the pores are clogged with dead skin cells and other pore-clogging impurities, your skincare products won’t penetrate better to deliver their potentials.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution also pairs glycolic acid with other skin soothing and hydrating ingredients such as aloe barbadensis leaf water, rosa damascena flower water and tasmanian pepperberry derivative to help reduce irritation associated with acid use. Continue reading to know more about these ingredients.

  • Rosa Damascena Flower Water: Rose damascena has mild astringent properties, therefore can be used as a toner for oily skin, prone to acne. Rose water refreshes the skin, without stripping it of its natural oils (a common problem with alcohol-based toners).
  • Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Water: Aloe barbadensis leaf juice can also soothe and reduce the visible effects of inflammation on the skin and also helps to prevent internal inflammation under the skin such as redness, swollen and sensitive skin, as well as various skin infections such as dermatitis and eczema.
  • Tasmanian Pepperberry Derivative: Tasmanian pepperberry derivative contains anti-inflammatory and skin soothing properties to help reduce irritation associated with acid use by curtailing redness, tightness and stings.

My Honest Review On The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution.

The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution review

God bless the day I introduced this glycolic acid toner into my skincare routine. It was a total transformation and reformation.

My Skin Texture.

The constant use of niacinamide serum has really helped reduced excess oil production and also refined my skin, shrink large pores and improve overall skin texture and you know what? The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution made things even more better. Infact, I’ll say it helped potentiate niacinamide’s effect to my skin by drastically reducing visible pores, addressing texture irregularities and improve overall skin texture. My face looks much more smoother and firm.

Any Effect On Acne?

Within the period of using this glycolic acid toning solution, I had no active acne, but I sure had some blackheads scattered around my nose (which my niacinamide serum was gradually getting rid of), but upon the incorporation of this facial toner into my routine, those blackheads surfaced the next morning, it was just like I popped or extracted them myself, but I never did so, The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution did the impressive job. So, I’m 100% sure that this facial toner will prove its efficacy towards treating acne (blackheads and whiteheads) by decongesting the pores.

Any Effect On Skin Tone?

My skin tone was improved, I noticed some added luminosity to my skin, and I’m not surprised because glycolic acid is a chemical exfoliant, it mildly exfoliates the skin by getting rid of dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin and also dissolves build-up congestions in the pores thereby creating a free passage for your skincare topicals to sink in better to do their respective jobs.

This wonderful product is here to forever stay in my skincare routine, it has really helped improved and refined my skin for good.

Note: You’re to use this product at night time only because this product contains 7% glycolic acid an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and particularly the possibility of sunburn, don’t forget to put on sunscreen during the day to protect your skin from the dangerous UV rays of the sun.

Possible Questions & Answers.

Q: Can individuals with sensitive skin use this product?

A: I have oily and sensitive skin, and I had no irritation of any sort from this product, all you need to do is ease your way into it, by using twice or thrice weekly, and also use a little amount on your entire face and neck (a little goes a long way).

However, glycolic acid isn’t for everyone. Some people have reactions to glycolic acid that can include symptoms such as swelling, itching, and burning sensations. Those with dry or sensitive skin types may find glycolic acid is too irritating for their skin. So, if you have dry or sensitive skin, it’s best you opt for lactic acid-based toners — as lactic acid is more mild and gentle on the skin, which makes it the best recommended AHA for people with dry or sensitive skin and new acid users too.

Glycolic acid is most suitable and recommended for individuals with oily or acne prone skin. So if you’re in this category, you can stop reading and go get this product, it’s awesome.

Q: How do i use The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution?

A: After cleansing your face, pat your face with a clean towel (don’t rub), then wet or saturate your cotton pad with this formulation and sweep it across your face and neck, wait for a minute for product to sink in, (don’t rinse off) then proceed with your additional skincare products as needed.

Q: How often should i use this product?

A: According to The Ordinary brand, you’re to use this product once per day and at night-time only.
I use this product once per day (at night-time only) and thrice (3 times) weekly. It’s a direct and exfoliating acid, it’s not recommended to use everyday as everyday use can trigger irritation due to over exfoliation.

Q: Does The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution sting?

A: No, it didn’t sting my skin. Within the period of using The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution I felt no stinging or tingling sensation. However as skin type differs you may experience a slight tingling (not burning) sensation — especially if you have sensitive skin or new to acids. This tingling sensation will subside when your skin have built tolerance to glycolic acid.
